The Charity Triples Bowls Tournament in aid of local charities

The Hastings Bowls Committee have decided to revise the donation plan each year, and 2007 will have the theme of Children and Young Adults with disabilities. The proceeds will be shared equally between:- Chestnut Tree House [A Children's Hospice] and Friary Gardeners [ where Young Adults are taught to cultivate land and profit from both the proceeds and the work].

Chestnut Tree House provides specialist palliative care, respite care and support to children with progressive life-limiting conditions and their families, from across East and West Sussex. The term “life-limiting” means children who are not likely to reach adulthood and includes illnesses such as Muscular Distrophy, Cystic Fibrosis, Hunters Syndrome and other progressive disorders. There are potentially 400 families with such children in Sussex.

When staying at Chestnut Tree House, the children have the opportunity to play with others, have a splash in a Hydrotherapy pool, relax in a multi-sensory room, or enjoy an outing in a minibus, all under the care of professional staff.

Friary Gardeners is a unique horticultural project based in secluded gardens at Ore Place Farm on the outskirts of Hastings. The charity provides young disabled adults with practical gardening skills and enables them to enjoy greater indepence.

Currently nearly 200 “Friary Gardeners” have “jobs” digging, hoeing, sowing and reaping, then selling the produce. They also provide gardening services to local people, particularly the elderly and disabled. Negotiations are now in process for them to purchase the freehold of the land they work, so securing their future.
