Hastings Open Bowls Tournament 2010

17 August 2010

Declan Nye, a member of Spartan Bowls Club in Bexhill, became the youngest ever bowler to win the Tournament's Men's Singles competitionHot on the heels of the “Pirates” swashbuckling their way into the Guinness Book of Records making Hastings the pirate capital of the world, another record was achieved for Hastings last Saturday at the Hastings Open Bowls Tournament.

Declan Nye, a member of Spartan Bowls Club in Bexhill, became the youngest ever bowler to win the Tournament's Men's Singles competition knocking the previous holder, Michael Jeapes (White Rock Bowls Club), off his perch. Michael, when he won in 1977, was aged 17 years and 11 months; Declan is 17 years and 4 months old. But the story does not end there because Declan's Mum, Linda (Sidley Martlets), won the Ladies' Singles title on the same day. Does this merit another entry in the world famous book?

Generally, the Tournament was hailed as a success, with the usual high standard of bowling and many excellent games. There was only one day of heavy rain which did not interrupt play and the tournament ended on time on Saturday with the presentation of trophies at 5.30 pm.

The results were:-
Ladies' Singles.
Winner - Linda Nye (Sidley Martlets)
Runner Up – Rachel Winter (Wimbledon Park)
Men's Singles.
Winner – Declan Nye (Spartan, Bexhill)
Runner Up – Simon Moore (White Rock)
Ladies' Pairs.
Winners – Lorraine Milburn and Maxine Clarkson (both White Rock)
Runners Up – Pat Adam and Sylvia Smith (both West Hoathley)
Men's Pairs.
Winners - Paul Whitfield and Charles Wright (both Eastbourne)
Runners Up – Ken Taber (Alexandra) and David Taber (Unattached)
Open Triples.
Winners – Kenny Bolton (White Rock), Keith Cheetham (White Rock) and Steve Marrett (Blackheath & Greenwich)
Runners Up – Bill Holloway, Terry Starkey and Mark Wilkinson (all Houghton Regis),

The winners of the newly introduced Consolation Drawn Pairs was won by Tony Heath (Houghton Regis) and Terry Baker (White Rock). It is hoped to hold this subsidiary event again next year to cater for players who have been knocked out of all the events they entered in the main tournament and also for markers to join in too.

In his closing address the Chairman, Gordon Baldock, thanked all those who had worked so hard during the week - in the Pavilion kitchen (Edna, Jenny and team), Lorraine and Terry (our thirst specialists beavering away behind the bar), our intrepid and tireless Competition Secretary Simon Moore, the Umpires, Hastings Borough Council and Quadron Services for the courtesy of the greens and for looking after the greens and gardens respectively and to the tournament committee for their labours throughout the year. He also expressed grateful thanks to our sponsors – Croft Glass (main), Bartletts SEAT), Gibbons Mannington (Chartered Accountants) and Quadron Services Ltd. He also said that the Committee were enormously grateful to Croft Glass Ltd for their sponsorship in the past and was delighted to announce that Croft Glass Ltd would double their contribution to £2,000 next year to mark the tournament's centenary. A wonderful gesture. Mark Gardiner, Managing Director of Croft Glass, no stranger to bowling, took part in the tournament this year and will, no doubt, be honing up his skills for 2011.

The tournament committee also wishes to thank all those who contributed raffle prizes, complimentary tickets and free or subsidised games at their venues – particularly White Rock Crazy Golf, Ten Pin Bowling at Glyne Gap and White Rock Theatre for their youth project The Madness Musical - Our House. The feedback remarks from the six lucky winners of complimentary tickets to the show – simply brilliant!.

Tournament dates for next year, our centenary year, are Monday 8 to Saturday 13 August 2011. Entry forms can be obtained from the website www.hastingsbowlstournament.com or by phoning 01424 461803. Entries close 13 June 2011 and it is recommended that they are sent in good time as a high demand is expected and there are only four greens now in White Rock Gardens

The end of season one day Charity Triples Tournament takes place at White Rock Gardens on Sunday 26 September 2010. Entries close 1 September and there is still room for more entries.
